The beginning of the story

We were missing a tool that would combine the best of Notion and LaTeX, real team collaboration with a fixed document structure. Tools like Notion and Docmost allow writing and collaborating in real time, but their PDF export does not handle formatting. LaTeX on the other hand maintains a fixed and professional structure, but lacks simple collaboration. We therefore decided to create an editor that combines both.

Key benefits

The document does not fall apart like in Word, the fixed structure ensures a consistent look even when multiple people edit at once.
No waiting for colleagues, edits, cursors and comments appear instantly without needing to refresh the page.
Writing is faster thanks to AI, the assistant directly in the editor helps with text, diagrams and ideas, including multiple AI agents at once.
The PDF output looks professional, unlike Notion or Docmost where export does not maintain formatting or pagination.
Nothing gets lost, every version of the document can be revisited and compared at any time.

What we worked on

Block editor with elements for content editing (headings, tables, code blocks, diagrams...)
AI assistant implementation, supporting both the user's own API key and AI managed directly by the TommDoc platform.
Real-time collaboration with instant display of edits and comments from other team members.
PDF export template system, which defines the fixed format and pagination of the document, from academic papers to internal documentation.
Document tree for hierarchical page organisation with drag-and-drop and quick search.
Multi-tenant architecture, allowing multiple organisations to be managed in one account with full data separation.

Result

TommDoc was created, our document editor for teams and individuals, combining the fixed document structure of LaTeX with the real collaboration of Notion or Docmost. The combination of a clear block editor, real-time collaboration, AI assistant and a PDF export that respects formatting allows teams to write, collaborate and publish finished documents in one place.
